[GreenKeys] 170 hz - cast in stone ?

Hi List,

Some of my original NATO kit operates on an FSK of
1300Hz, and I would appreciate your comments on the
following:

1.	Is there any reason not to use frequency shifts
other than 170Hz ?  I realise this has been adopted as
the `standard` , but are there specific technical / 
regulatory reasons for this ?
2.	Has anyone (either side of the pond) capability in
this respect  - apart from the small handfull of
others with the same kit ?
