We used the gummed tape (we called it "slip" in UK) Creed machines on our
European circuits in the 60's.
To facilitate the wetting of the tape, each circuit had a water wheel.
Some units were just a bakelite bowl filled with water and a solid brass
wheel about 2" wide with a centred spindle resting on the sides of the bowl
which the operator spun to get the slip wet.
More elaborate devices were cast in brass with an integrated wheel the width
of the slip. The slip from the printer was inserted under the first spindle,
over the wetted wheel and under the second spindle.
A thimble cutter on the operator's forefinger or scissors were used to cut
the
slip to length to fit the width of a telegram form.
After shifts of a couple of hours on these circuits, operators spent quite
some time
peeling off the caked-on glue on their fingers.
Cheers
