When I was on Active Duty a few years ago (well, 39 to be exact), I 
maintained a couple of weather fax machines on the Valley Forge.  I want to say they 
were AN/UXH-2B but that doesn't seem to compute.  They had a continuous belt 
that had three solenoid controlled styli mounted on it.  And used pressure 
sensitive paper.  They were about the same physical size as the TT-1.  I don't 
recall any particular odor coming from them, other than scorched insulation.
