Yes, I too have become aware of the loss of radio shack as a vendor of
components to ham radio ... sort of the blind leading the deaf...
At one time, we would see TTY (salvage) at a place called Herbach and Rademan
(H&B) on the East coast. They still have some stuff on their web site.
MECI has been around for some time, but I have not seen much of an
improvement in their inventory listing on the Internet web site... Burdens surplus
center _www.SurplusCenter.com_ (http://www.SurplusCenter.com)
has in the past had a good selection of hardware (breakers, switches, sensors
etc.)
Are these places on the wane, or have I lost all track of the hobbyist and
experimenters providers that we used to use...
If you really wish for a visit back into time, look through an old QST or CQ
magazine from the 50's and 60's. Lots of sources for parts from military
salvage...
Perhaps someone out there with more brains and time than I have available
could take and try and make a comprehensive list of the remaining sources for the
group at large, I will print out the two responses (in the radio shack
thread) that had more than a few mentions of a few remaining outfits, and I will
continue to collect these listings, for future reference.
I never used the oft mentioned one in the SFO area, that went under a year or
two ago, then there is J. B. Saunders in Boulder (still open),
RDR in South Denver (Dabney Crumph and associates)
Centennial Electronics in Colorado Springs CO, (over 10,000 new RCA tubes
still on the shelf)
C&H Surplus, Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA seems to still be alive.
And OEM parts in Colorado springs CO.
These are my few contributions to the list I can make a this time from pure
simple deteriorating memory of a 60 year old. As I remember more, I will try
and remember them long enough to get them to this thread...
