Hi Jerry, I don't know the history of the various
protocol's but
 
ZCZC means start of message.  Usually followed by
'routing indicators' or a list of addresses to whom
the message go's to.
 
ZCZC NBQK would say this message is going to the USS
INTREPID CVS-11.  NBQK is the ship id.  Which I was on
as a Radioman 2nd.
 
The NNNN means end of message.  The Model 28 stuntbox
could be setup to read this and the header information
and do something that it had been programmed to do.
 
I was a 'TELEX' (5 Level Model 32) operator for a
Japanese Trading Company while I was in College 
(1970-1975).  It was a Western Union Machine and if I
cut several messages on one paper tape and sent them,
I would add 'NNNNEND' to the last one to indicate end
of traffic.
