JIM,
I really appreciate your input. I have 108 solder connections to make
up the cables for my AN/URC-35B
Very kind of you to share your experience.

I would like to put I my $.02 - for what it's worth.
A long time ago I built an IMSI computer. Ten plug in boards into
the Mother board. At .1 inch spacing. At the end of the project the
small soldering iron had a 'V' notch in it.
At that time I had a pair of 'loops' that fit over my glasses. With
extra light it worked well.
The setup I now have is. Three paint cans, quart size cans. These
have 1 1/2 inches of lead melted into the cans so they stay where they
are
put. One can has a 1/4 X20 bolt through the can and that holds the
spool of
solder. I can pull on the solder and the can does not move. I don't
have
to look at it. Another can with lead in the bottom will hold a solder
gun
if you place it butt end first. I can lay the gun down and it wont
tip or
move. For the fine work I have a variable heat iron. For big work I
have a
propane powered very small flame torch. The big torch - for copper
pipes -
I use to start fires (HIHI)
I have one of those gimbaled vises. Yep I filled the base with
lead, it does not move when I am pressing the item to be soldered with
the
iron. Almost everything gets put into the vise for soldering. I can
do a
much better job if I don't have to hold the item and it doesn't move.
There is a lighted magnifying glass mounted on a swivel arm. It is
handy for the small stuff.
Where to get lead? The tire stores have to pay to get rid of the
wheel weights. When you buy a set of tires and bring a replacement
bucket
they will give you the lead. Next week I'll get more lead.
What do I do with the third can? Usually I cannot find all three
cans. That is why I have three hammers also.
A couple of weeks ago people were discussing the soldering setup for
multiwire cable so that is why I put my $0.02 .
