Well - the OT's I knew back in the 60's were nice old geezers.
Far from perfect, but I would go along with the word genteel.
Of course, one of the funniest things I ever "saw" happen in
ham radio was the time one of the OT's was on a repeater, made
a few exchanges and signed off.
Unfortunately, when he hung up the mic, the PPT button got stuck.
The next 15 minutes was *HILARIOUS*. Good thing the FCC wasn't listening.
The last few seconds consisted of "...Hey Jerry - how come the
"transmit" light is on and the meter shows 10 watts output?"
"...whut? - *OH - SON OF A ....!".*
*CLUNK*
