Actuall the broadcasters used purple on canary because it was easier to
read.
The optical frequencies provide better contrast to the human eye.

Hi James,
We used black ribbons in our MITEs in the Navy Patrol Squadrons. I do not
know what the black shoe Navy used but I always assumed it was black.
The news and weather people all used purple because the purple ribbons were
less expensive and they used lots of them
