Here in the UK it is pretty much independent of brand - anyway they all
operate on the same principle of an electronic ballast.  This is essentially
a small switched mode power supply, but with no screening whatever - it just
sits there and shrieks.  Even my audio system sounds progressively smoother
and pleasant to listen to once I've gone around plunging the house into
darkness by switching the things off.

I keep a stock of incandescent bulbs for when I'm trying to carefully
measure something.  Try the probe test - or even a BNC to croc clips - it is
truly scary.
