If you are wearing out  ribbons, you are beating them to death. A 28 print 
hammer spring should be set  on No. 1.
In the 15, the spring should be set to where the keys are  just hitting the 
platen for a sharp image.
I have been re-inking the same  ribbons for the past year and a half with no 
problems.
