The big maker of paper tapes and printer rolls was Paper Manufacturers
Co. with the Perfection brand name. They had a location in California
and one in the East, Pennsylvania I think.
I keep wondering if we couldn't find a company, think they are called
"paper converters", that could make tape for us at reasonable cost.
When Teletype Corp. was still in business they had some way to obtain
special rolls of paper and tape for development purposes - I don't know
if they had to pay a lot for the specialty run, or if some company did
it cheap in hopes that there would be a big market for the product
in the future. For instance, I'm pretty sure that the stock ticker based
on the Model 37 used a wider tape than the older model that may have used
the same tape as the glass bell jar model. Also I remember during
Inktronic development at one point there was a roll of single-copy yellow
paper with sprocket holes punched in the edges. I guess at the time
they were having trouble getting friction feed to work at the
required speed and thought it might have to be sprocket fed even for
single copies.
All the people I can think of to ask where Teletype got their experimental
supplies are dead now.
