Biggest mistake I made about 25 years ago with my 15 printer was to spray 
some Freeall on the selector plates,  I thought that light oil would be ok 
for that part.  It worked well for a while and then gummed up.  I had to 
take the whole area apart and give it a good cleaning.  After that I never 
used that stuff for anything.
I put my printer back in service after it had set for about 5 years.  It 
would print fine except it would not go to the Figs mode.  Finally removed 
the top part and  took the thing outside and gave it a good washing with 
some home made gun cleaner called Ed's Red.  Mix of kerosene, auto 
transmission fluid and a few other things.  Then reoiled it and it worked 
fine again.
