gfmurphy at earthlink.net wrote directly to me expressing some questions
and concerns for the rant I posted against his post. I'm posting my
comments to the list, since what I posted then was public - I can
certainly post this reply to the list as well. Since his questions and
comments were not intended for the public, I won't quote them; but I
will refer to them as they were directly regarding my post.

Jerry:
I'm not going to answer your question(s) and comments point by point...
but I will respond in general.

My response was inappropriate and wrong. No excuses, a couple of
reasons. Several "piling on" emails had already been received and then
your message - received later - seemed to also be "piling on" and
(because of the timing) seemed to be mocking my post. Your explanation
of "timing" causes me to realize that was not your intention, and yes,
I've been caught by similar circumstances myself. One of the hazards of
the medium I guess. Still, in hind-sight, no excuse.

As far as any "factual" issues when quoting the "unit issue price" -
that is a matter of perspective; and yes - I took exception to that -
because those of us who have worked in/with the Federal Supply System
know that the stated price on many items has little to no relationship
to "the real world" - a real price that you or I might pay.

The prices shown in the Federal Supply System often reflects the most
recent landed cost - which depending on circumstances can include the
product itself, contract proration of development costs, transportation,
finders / brokers fees, environmental fees, expediting fees, and fees
that would embarrass even callous loan sharks (hence my statement about
the $640 toilet seat - which is - BTW - a true price once paid - there
have also been obscene amounts paid for hammers, and other things). So
quoting prices on the acquisition of obsolete materials through the
Federal Supply System is as often as not just a "snapshot" of a one-time
transaction - and not necessarily a legitimate indicator of "real world"
costs.

But - would my "exception" to your comment have been different had I
been aware of the timing issue -and therefore NOT considered it just
more "nay saying" (piling on)? Certainly.

As I noted at the beginning of this post - regardless of the reasons -
choosing your post as the target of my rant was inappropriate, and I
herewith apologize.

kindest regards...
