I believe "mainliner" came from Irv's employment by United Airlines -
didn't they call themselves "the route of the Mainliners" at one time?
There's also the railroad and wire telegraph association of the term,
such as a "main line sounder" for a telegraph sounder that was
connected directly to the line, not using a relay.
