[GreenKeys] Experience on this list

I must have gotten an old hand when we moved into our new house. We had DSL installed with our phone service. The modem kept having to reset itself, and would lose connectivity. Got the tech out after about a week, while I was at work. After a few minutes, my wife put him on the phone with me. After a friendly, brief and knowledgeable discussion, he explained to me the problem was in the house, and was mine to fix. Fortunatly I have enough old-time datacomm experience to understand what he was saying. For some reason we have a 3-pair cable coming into our house, so he told me what pair DSL would be on, and GAVE me a DSL splitter at the box so I could get rid of the plug-in filters. 20 ft. of new cable later, internet works great. Found the previous owners had cut & spliced phone extention cords around the basement rafters and through the walls to provide extra phone jacks. To this day I have no clue what route the DSL signal was taking to get to the
modem, or in how many simultaneous directions it was going.

I second that thought as well, Jack. There is some numbskull down the block
who has repeatedly tried to steal the cable TV signal from the cable, and
always somehow seems to screw up the telephone circuits, which are about a
foot and a half over the cable. When the "phone man" comes out to "check my
line", they automatically tell me it is the phone wiring in my house. This
last nincompoop was offended when I asked him to check the drop with his
buttset, but when he did, lo and behold, he heard all sorts of crosstalk,
and could not get a dial tone.

Sure 'nuff, the idiot down the street once again screwed up the junction
block on the pole, and it effected the service four houses up.

And I have never had any experience being a "phone man".
