Lar,

I agree with a lot of what you say.  Especially the vehicle comment.  I 
usually keep one so long that a few extra holes one way or the other have no 
effect on its value.  And the low probability of there being another 
generation with any interest.

WRT the ST-8000A - I'm not familiar with either it or the civilian ST-8000 
but I get the impression that you essentially converted it to an ST-8000.  
But some of the recent comments on how to hook up newer TTY machines are 
silly.  There used to be a comman term for it but it has long since become 
politically incorrect.  The fact is that even though the originally specified 
connectors may be expensive and require an expensive tool to assemble (if you 
buy everything new from a distributor instead of like the machine - in 
surplus), (a) with the proper tool the crimp type connectors go together in less 
time than it takes for the soldering iron to heat up, (b) cheaper versions of 
the connectors are often available, and (c) the contacts (or usable 
substitutes) by themselves are cheap, can be soldered, take less time to do, and 
look infinitely neater than some of the alternatives mentioned.
