Model 17 was a Hellschreiber-like machine. I can only presume, not state
as a fact, that maybe they were used to monitor German Hellschreiber
transmissions during ww-II.
I have and have scanned the following material on Model 17
Specification S-5226, November 29, 1939, "Description of Teletype Model
17 Radio Printing System using 7-line Character Pattern"
Drawing WD-2036 Wiring Diagram of Transmitting Table
Drawing WD-1902 Wiring Diagram of Rectifier-Amplifier
Drawing WD-2039 Wiring Diagram of Receiving Station Cable Connections
Bulletin 103 Description and Adjustments of the Tape Transmitter
Bulletin 1018 Parts, Tape Transmitter and Auto Control Relay Unit
Drawing WD-2004 Wiring Diagram of the transmitter
Bulletin 1096 Parts, Scanning Distributor Model 17
Specification S-5186 Adjustment of the Radio Distributor, Model 17
Specification S-5298 Adjustments, Lubrication, and Preparation of
Operation of the Model 17 Radio Printer

Specification S-5286 REC-17 Rectifier, Description and Adjustments
Specification S-5287 REC-17 Rectifier, Mounting on Table
The Model 17 printer was, like the Hellschreiber, a simple machine in
which a paper tape passed between a spiral platen and a print hammer.
The sending machine used a Baudot perforated tape, read by a magnet-
stepped transmitter, and then there was a "distributor" which translated
Baudot to Hellschreiber signals.
