I want to remove the typewheel on my ASR33 Teletype to clean it. The
documentation indicates there is a special tool needed to hold the
typewheel when tightening the nut on the top of the typewheel.

Is it possible to remove, clean and reinstall the typewheel without
this tool? If so, what are the instructions?

What can I use to clean the typewheel? Alcohol? Water? ??

Thanks!

Barry,

You can hold the typewheel with your thumb and fingers while using a 3/16
wrench or nutdriver to loosen the nut. There should be a lock and flat
washer under the nut. Note the positioning of the typewheel before removing.
With the machine off and typewheel in home position, there will be a
little notch or a circle in the wheel pointing towards the platen. Clean with
solvent and an old toothbrush or the like. Replace the wheel and only snug
the nut. Type ABCDEFG HIJKLMNO and check for proper printing (shading
right and left). Loosen nut and move wheel slightly to get desired results.
When satisfied, tighten nut slightly more than snug while holding wheel
with thumb and fingers. Tight, but not too much or you will break the post.

I am giving away all my secrets here. LOL.
