[GreenKeys] ST8000 and PK232

Guys,

A few week ago, I obtained a ST8000 from one of the guys on the reflector and managed to hook it up to my ST8000....Thanks to Dino, (KL0S) for the connection information....

This information, originally authored by W1VXV, who is now NT1V explains in detail how to use the ST8000 in front of the ST8000 and how to modify the PK232...

After following the instructions, I found the combination worked but I had to keep the ST8000 in Reverse to decode...and because it was in Reverse, I could not use the Regen B/B function. 

Looking at the schematic on page 162 of the Maintenance Manual, I noticed that the instruction mentioned above uses Pin 3 RXD as the output from the ST8000 to the PK232. This will drive the output voltage High for a Space....I believe the PK232 needs a low...

So taking a wild (educated?) guess, I moved the connection to Pin 10 of the ST8000 Terminal Connector. This pin provides a High for Mark and a Low for Space.

Now everything works as it should without having to keep the ST8000 in Reverse and the Regen feature is functional.

Hi!

I am in the same boat as you.? I get married in the 1970s and with kids didn;t have the time to continue on RTTY.? 

Then, I retired 5 years ago and got the time to clean up my M28ASR, sort out my ST-6 that I built in 1970 and 

start-up my Collins T-440 TX and R-30A RX.? All of the gear had been unused for 30 years but was functional after 

a few weeks work.

Then, I started tuing around and found that "everyone" was using a computer!

What a change...but I was lucky because I had the mod kits to add automatic carriage return and line feed to my

M28ASR.? Once they were installed, I was good to go and have so far worked WAC RTTY,?all 50 states for WAS 

RTTY, a total of 218 DXCC countries on RTTY?with 119 yet to work, and all CQ zones for WAZ RTTY.

So, the old gear is still competitive in the pileups and on the bands.

There are clearly some Teletype components there, but it's not part of a
Teletype.  It's not a Friden Flexowriter component either.  However,
many early computer manufacturers used Teletype punches in their own products.

I can't find an exact match yet.  But it may be an early DEC-era peripheral.
Take a look at

That's a later DEC high-speed punch, but note the similarity of
the layout.  Both are set up for motor drive through a timing belt.
Note the big flat-toothed sprockets.  In Mack's device, the
sprocket is there, but the belt and motor are missing.

Mack's device requires external electronics.  Note the optical interrupter,
the metal timing disk with slot, and all those wires going to the
DB-25 connector.  This thing is intended to be driven by something
with electronic buffering.  So it's part of a computer peripheral.

The DEC high speed punch mentioned above shows a somewhat similar
mechanism with its support hardware - power supply, motor, toothed
belt, and drive electronics.

After looking at the DEC hardware pictures on line, I can't find any
exact matches in DEC gear.  It may be from one of DEC's competitors.
Probably dates from the late 1960s or early 1970s.  Earlier than
that, and it wouldn't use an optical interrupter for timing.
Later than that, the drive electronics would be small enough they
would have been packaged with the punch.
