Don't feel bad. NO ONE has the -definitive- answer, not even the ARRL. 
Having said that, my money is on "ham" as being like a ham actor. 
Remember, this was during the heyday of the broadcasting era and amateur 
radio was a way for the average Joe Citizen to get -his- very own 
broadcasting station and be, well... a ham.

Just my 2 cents.
