I had no idea that people were having such a hard time
getting data to print for Teletype machines connected to
computers.
Last year I wrote "BaudotRSS"
which will follow any number of RSS feeds and send them to
a Baudot Teletype. I normally have this following a Reuters
RSS feed, but it can follow any RSS feed, of which there are
thousands on-line. Even Twitter, which gets banal rather fast.
It also talks to Google Voice, so that you can send SMS messages
to a Teletype. Works on both Windows and Linux.
On the hardware side, I have a board design for driving
60mA current loops. See "http://www.aetherltd.com/connecting.html".
The board artwork and parts list are there.
I also have a way to get low-speed serial from a USB port.
See "http://www.aetherltd.com/connectingusb.html".
A new version of BaudotRSS is coming out soon, with a
real configuration file and the ability to talk to the
Twilio SMS gateway as well as Google Voice.
What we actually do with a Model 15 can be seen here.
We set up a whole steampunk telegraph office, with operators
and messengers, at steampunk conventions. Attendees send
in messages by texting them from their cell phones. They're
printed on a Model 15, formatted as telegrams, cut off
the roll, stamped, placed in yellow window envelopes, and
delivered around the convention by messengers. We did
260 messages in two days at the last convention.
We'll be at the steampunk convention in Santa Clara, CA
again in March.
