I've been doing this using a crappy old Telit GSM modem module and an ARM
LPC dev board. I was pleased and amused to discover you can still set the 
serial interface on those to run at 45.45 baud, 5 bits in hardware, without
even having to bitbang.  Google Voice is more convenient though since it 
just sends you an email, and I've already set up an email -> teletype gateway.
