I found that a most excellent way to make friends with someone is to  
simply be interested in what he does:

To the seaman in the boiler room: "What the hell do all those big  
valves do?"

To the radar technician in the radio shop: "You keep the radar  
running?  I bet doing alignments on the 0-9 level is tricky work. (0-9  
is WAY up in the island of a carrier among the antennas.)
