Hi All:
Has anyone any experience using Evapo-Rust from Rust Stop,
or similar produsts from other maufacturers?
The following from their site describes the process:
"EVAPO-RUST works through selective chelation. This is a
process in which a large synthetic molecule forms a bond
with metals and holds them in solution. Most chelating
agents bind many different metals. The active ingredient in
EVAPO-RUST bonds to iron exclusively. It can remove iron
from iron oxide but is too weak to remove iron from steel
where the iron is held much more strongly. Once the
chelating agent has removed the iron, a sulfur bearing
organic molecule pulls the iron away from the chelator and
forms a ferric sulfate complex which remains water soluble.
This frees the chelating agent to remove more iron from
rust."

Another similar product is Ultra-One:

This also works in a similar fashion.
My reason for enquiring, is that my latest project is
restoring a Fairchild Teletypesetter Standard Perforator.
Most of the machine will be a relatively easy restoration.
BUT - the actual punch unit is severely rusted, and I would
like to save as much of it as possible, as my chances of
finding another 6 level 7/8 inch paper tape punch to fit it
are small to impossible.
If this stuff does work, it might be the saviour for this
project, and probably many others. To use it, you soak the
item in it for two hours, rinse it off, then re-soak for
more time. Instructions on the Evapo-Rust site above.
I would be interested in hearing if anyone has any
experience with this or a similar product. If it works, I
will get some, and give it a try and report back to the
list.
