[GreenKeys] TTY Tool Storage (Slightly OT, but pertinent)

Hi All:

Until yesterday, my rather large collection of teletype
tools were well overflowing a fiber toolkit from a Quebec
Telephone Company and a Rubbermaid tote box...

Over the weekend, I went around a huge yard sale held
yearly on the eastern end of PEI covering some 70 miles of
highway. Appropriately, it is called the 70 Coastal Yard
Sale.

In it, I found a small stacking set of tool chests on great
shape, and bought both the lower and upper chests for $20
total. Great deal.

One thing that has always bothered me about steel tool
chests has been that tools lying in their shelves tend to
chip the paint, then rust and corrosion can spread to the
tools.

For this reason, I went looking for drawer liner for it.
Most places locally had only the non-slip web type liner,
and I was looking for a solid liner. I ended up buying 6
feet of black rubber or vinyl floor runner (total cost
close to $20). You used to be able to buy this at tool
dealers - it was exactly the same material and lasts for
years. This will give me enough to line not only that tool
chest, but also the many drawers of my machinists chest in
the barn.

As both of these chests are located where the temperature
goes below freezing in the winter, this will keep the tools
off the condensation which inevitably will form in the
drawers during the winter months, and the ribs will keep
the tools in place inside the chests.

It is great stuff and exactly what I was looking for. I was
able to buy enough to do both the top and bottom of this
chest, and all the top drawers of the other machininst's
chest in the barn.

Just a suggestion. When I was young, it was drummed into me
that if you take care of your tools, that they will take
care of you when you need them. Another thing that helps
with tools made of iron or steel is to wipe them with light
oil once a year. We take great care of our teletypes - why
not do the same for our tools!
