Richard, I remember those clicks, pops, etc. I actually built a CO class
Step-by-Step switch from scratch and can emulate all of those sounds.. I
can even BlueBox!

I thought the FCC dropped this idea (?)
The old Ma Bell system had some problems but remember
you were renting a service and all of its parts were
compatible. "Foreign" equipment could screw up the system. I
think AT&T would have been ahead of the game by an approval
process for outside stuff, but they were big and rigid.
Also remember that if anything broke the friendly
installer (and they were friendly) would come and fix it
free. If you broke the phone they would install a new one
free.
I wonder if there are others on the list old enough to
remember staying on the line when placing a long distance
call to hear the circuit being built? At one time it really
was the "Voice with a Smile".
