>All that said, if you have a stable, smooth running installation of WIN XP,

Unless you were mucking about in msconfig like I was, trying to find out why
the machine was booting so slowly, and then all of a sudden a window pops up
and says "This copy of windows needs to be activated". I clicked on the microsoft
popup and it took me to the program store requesting I buy Windows 7 because
XP is no longer supported.

We purchased the software upgrade for our HP from Windows ME years ago but
turns out that in one of the updates a program called Windows Genuine Advantage
was added to XP. Windows Genuine Advantage scans the system to see if the OS
matches the original setup. If not, it flags the key and reports it as invalid. Reports
on the web say as much as 1 in 5 systems are wrongfully disabled.

I decided to purchase a refurbished machine with XP already installed to replace the
HP. Guess what it tried to download in the first update? Windows Genuine Advantage.
I have since disabled all updates. I love XP and will keep it as long as it works. The
paranoid me thinks that Microsoft is using any excuse to make people upgrade. Who
knows.
