The first thing one has to worry about with an Extel printer is whether
it uses a ribbon. Many of them do not, and rely on a special paper
developed by 3M. The explanation I heard is that the white paper is
coated with little eggs, each one containing black ink, and a blow from
the printing wire breaks the eggs and releases the ink. Other printers
were made with ribbon mechanisms so they could take ordinary paper, no
doubt at a considerable saving in money.
If you have a ribbonless printer you are probably up a creek, because
I don't think the special paper is being made anymore, at least not in
sizes appropriate for a page printer.
