What ever it is the code chart on the side is
interesing. It shows some European characters, CH and N with
a swiggle over it and I think U with an umlaut over it.
Also, the punctuation is the old version, not sure when this
was changed and the old version still shows up in much later
books with code charts. The main change was the Period which
was .. .. .. which was changed to .-.-.-. formerly the comma
and the comma became --..-- which had been the exclamation
point, which was dropped. This chart has this old version of
the code. Now, I think the changes were made by
international agreement sometime around the early or
mid-1930's but it still shows up in much later books, for
instance, _Reference Data for Radio Engineers_ 4h edition,
published in 1956!
So, its possible this device could have been made long after
the code was officially changed. Also, some of the
characters have small numbers beside them in brackets,
another puzzle.
Another point is that the appearance of a code card on
the side suggests the machine was intended for people who
might not know the code. Very curious and I also would like
some authoritative answer to what it is.
