Peter,

I can only speculate.

Perhaps the main computer, or one of the many smaller ones, is running  
Heavy Metal.  The whole process would be triggered by the reception  
and classification of the antique teletype signal during routing  
spectrum scanning of all signals from DC to Daylight.

Once the frequency was monitored, and the program started up, the  
transmissions would be recorded in the ship's main data base for  
analysis.

(Of course the level of details in the TTY Graphic I have is far to  
coarse to support any such imaginings.)
