I have found that it depends greatly on the kind of ink on the original
ribbon. I tried this trick on a Calculagraph ribbon and it worked great
until the WD40 carrier evaporated and rendered me with a completely useless
ribbon, whereas was before "the treatment" it at least made a faint
image. I believe it worked for a total of maybe an hour.
Your mileage may vary.
