The ST8000 wil generate either AFSK or FSK for transmit.....audio tones
or level shift.  It will also regenerate tones in the receive direction and 
speed / code conversion.

The 8000 was about $3k new, the one on ebay is a bargain at $195.  About
10 years ago I found one NIB for $650 and couldn't write the check fast enough.
The scope tubes are unobtainium though.....
