You are not the only one, I actually copied real wirephotos (AP
and UPI and others) from international HF radio circuits in the mid
1960s when I was in HS. There were several regular broadcasts of
wirephoto packages similar to the ubiquitous RTTY news transmissions of
that era (which I also copied a lot of) - transmitted to various remote
places where cable or microwave circuits weren't available
(international satellite circuits were a later development than this mid
60s time period and pretty completely replaced all the HF fax and RTTY
broadcasts by the 1970s).

I used various technology, primary one was an actual film/paper
photo facsimile machine of 1950s vintage I rescued from incomplete and
cannibalized surplus scrap and adapted and enhanced. Generally I used
standard black and white photo paper with it.

Much of this was related to my early efforts to receive APT
photos from weather satellites in 1963-64 but the HF signals were there
on the bands and it was interesting to see the images.
