Ballistol is great for uses  other than long-term lubrication (it's 
hygroscopic). Even the maker of Ballistol  makes other products for gun maintenance 
and preservation. As you said,  Ballistol is non-toxic and an excellent 
disinfectant, fungicide and germicide.  When my cat had an infection on his paw 
the vet told me to apply Ballistol, and  it worked fine. Ballistol can also 
be used on leather, though I wouldn't. Its  use as laxative for humans is 
common.
