'Way back' in 1970, or so. a good friend, Bob Leland, W8GBT (SK), built an electronic speed converter or 'gear shift',
if you will, out of TTL chips. I think that this was before the UART chips were down in price where us ordinary hams
could afford to experiment with them.
Bob had a Model 28KSR, which he fitted with 100 WPM gears and he would feed it with the output of the 'gear shift'
from a source of 60 WPM Teletype signals. Each character was performed at 100 WPM, but the actual running speed was
still 60 WPM. If you have not seen this phenomenon, it is quite hard to describe. There is 'extra space' or extra
time between characters, and it sort of sounds like some sort of 'stutter' instead of that beautiful sound we all
associate with a well oiled and adjusted 28 running at 'machine speed' from a tape signal somewhere.
Bob gave his first version of this 'gear shift' to a local Detroiter who was not a ham, but was deeply involved in
Teletype as a hobby, of all things. He did ask to keep the chips, since they were a bit expensive at that time,
and I guess it took him a while to round them up to 'plug into' his wire wrapped perf board project. He had it all
done on paper first, then he built the thing on the perf board, rounded up the ICs, plugged them in and all he had
to do was to set a 'clock' circuit to agree with the needs of 100 WPM, and it ran like a top.
I feel quite honored to have known Bob, and seen some of his creativity from the time we first met until his untimely
passing from cancer. One of his 'creations' was the Leland Model 872 "VidiType" device which took a loop or logic
circuit signal and converted it to an NTSC video signal which could be fed into a video monitor to see the teletype
signal on a monitor screen. It was sort of a 're-hash' of the HAL Communications RVD-1005, but his unit had a few
new ideas incorporated. I've forgotten which issue of the RTTY Journal had a write up about it, but in 1973, Bob
was one of several featured speakers at the RTTY Forum at the Dayton Hamvention. That year, Leland Associates had
a booth in one of the arenas, and Bob, Jim Prest, WA8SEL and Gene Wilzcak were demonstrating the device with tape
recorded signals feeding a simple TU, whose output was fed into the Model 872, and thence to a nice video monitor.
Jim and Gene were the 'Associates', as they each had something to contribute to the final product after they did
an analysis of Bob's original hand wired model. I think that they sold several hundred of their devices before
the task was virtually taken over by microprocessor based packages.
Anyway, it was quite interesting to see Bob's Model 28 running in the 'upshift' mode.
73,
Ralph - W8ROI

I worry that all the progress he made at rehab will be lost. He remembers "home" now, he was very confused about where we were going to live. We are both trying to relax and I think it will be easier after the constant parade slows down.

Tips to keep private email addresses out of the hands of spammers:
1. Avoid giving your or anyone else's email address to any web site.
2. Instead of forwarding email, copy and paste the text.
3. For group emails, use the "bcc:" (Blind Carbon Copy) field instead of "To:".
(Put your own address or a fake address in the "To:" field).
4. Want to do more? Attach this text as a custom signature to the
bottom of all your outgoing email.
5. Delete any visible headers in the text window.
