Darryl,

Without knowing it you have opened up Pandora's box.
It seems that no two Teletype enthusiasts can agree on the best oil or
grease.
Even the Teletype and military specifications differed.

KS 7470 oil was specified by Teletype and Western Electric for
Teletype machines other than the high speed punches.
It was made by the American Oil Company in New Jersey and was SAE 20
non-detergent motor oil with something added to make it smell better.

KS 7471 grease was a high temperature wheel bearing grease similar to
what was used to pack auto wheel bearings.
However that was many many years ago.

Many of us have found the newer chemistry to be beneficial to our
machines. I use One Lube with PTFE chemistry and also One Grease.
Both are made by the Slick 50 company. I find that they stay where you
put them and keep lubricating after other oils and grease have dried up.

Actually the oil and grease are not as important as making sure you
use the correct lubricant at the correct points.
Teletype issued very good bulletins on where to put grease and where
to put oil. Lube caps that look today like they should be for oil are
many times meant to be used for grease.

I have a CD with the maintenance practice for routines on Model 28s
and 35s originated by Western Union Engineering.
It has photographs with colored indicators and is a great reference
for maintaining these machines. The file is huge so I cannot email it
to you.
I can send you a CD if you pay me $5.00 for the CD and postage
expense. I can also print you a book but it would cost $30. plus
postage.

Let me know.

after a good total (DRY) cleaning. Thanks Darryl WA5TOO
