I just remembered, one of our field trips was to the Fort Lee (Va)
NORAD SAGE facility. It was a four story concrete block building that
was basically a large computer. They had tubes as large as water
cooler bottles. I don't remember exactly how we got permission, but we
did enter the room where Air Force technicians were monitoring all the
aircraft off the eastern seaboard of the US. It was top secret and
very cool...
