"Slipping a shaft"
Reads like porno...
When repairing M28, 35, and 37 Teletype machines, we developed a
method we called "slipping the shaft."
The problem comes up when you have to replace an individual component
on the mainshaft... a gear, a clutch or both.
Use either a spare shaft with no components on it, or use a plain
steel rod the same (or slightly less) diameter.
Oil the mainshaft and tool shafts well.
Remove all the screws holding the clutch and gear "modules" to the
mainshaft.
Hold on to the typebox clutch with left hand
Push the new or temporary shaft or rod through the selector clutch
towards the clutch or gear module that needs to be replaced.
Separate the two shafts just enough to replace the "module"
Return the original shaft to it's original position and replace all of
the screws.
This takes a bit of patience and finesse, but in many cases we found
it quicker and easier than totally removing the mainshaft from the
typing unit.
