Johnathan,
Welcome to Greenkeys!
The TT-98 (aka AN/UGC-4) was the basic teleprinter of the US Army and
Air Force from about 1950 to about 1980. Note that all teletypewriters
are not "teletypes", only the ones made by Teletype Corp! This one is a
Kleinschmidt. The manuals for the TT-98 are TM 11-5815-200-12 and TM
11-5815-200-35. The -12 manual is the operator's manual and the -35 is
the maintenance manual. There are also manuals that list parts (they
end in "P", but very few parts are available, so they aren't worth
much). These manuals are available on-line at
http://rattrig.com/manuals/tm%27s.htm. What hams refer to as "RTTY" the
military referred to as "RATT". The site http://rattrig.com covers the
standard military tactical radioteletype installations of the 1950-70s.
The TT-98 was the standard teleprinter in these units and also in fixed
installations.
A reperforator receives the 5-bit teletypewriter code (from a wire line
or radio) and punches the 5-bit pattern into a paper tape (it may also
print the message on the tape). The paper tape is used to store the
message in a form that can easily be retransmitted. The "brother" of
the TT-98 printer is the TT-76 "transmitter/reperforator" (see
rattrig.com). It can punch tape directly from its keyboard
("perforator"), punch & print tape from an incoming line, and read and
transmit the prepared tape out to a land-line or radio.
Teletypewriter operators would usually prepare messages on tape first.
This allowed some chance of correcting mistakes and meant that messages
could be sent out at one time when the circuit was open. There were
also large teletypewriter relay systems that only used tape. These were
mainly used by the military, but also by Western Union, FAA, etc. These
were known as "Torn-Tape Relay" systems, because someone had to tear an
incoming tape off a reperforator, read the routing information off the
tape, and then get it queued up on the proper tape reader to send it on
its way. See http://www.navy-radio.com/tty-relay-equip.htm for pictures
of equipment & installations.
Have fun & good luck!
