[GreenKeys] UGC74B Setup

Hi Mark,
The UGC-74 is a fairly complex piece of gear with numerous features and
options, so it does take some time to learn. Assuming you have set the
internal interface panel switches for "KSR" operation, you have two
modes to choose from, LINE MODE, and CHARACTER MODE, selectable at
power-up. Upon powerup, the machine prints an initialization message,
then prompts you to select LINE or CHARACTER mode.
In LINE mode, the machine stores a line of typed text, transmitting the
entire line at the selected baud rate when you hit RETURN. This also
applies to printing of received characters. CHARACTER mode transmits
each character as it is typed. Upon selecting CHARACTER mode, the
machine prints the prompt:
"LOCAL ENTRY PRINT? (Y/N)"
Type "N" "CR" to prevent those echo characters you describe. Note that
in CHARACTER mode, you must send line feeds manually, as with a real TTY.
If there's a way to suppress local copy altogether in either LINE or
CHARACTER mode, I'm not aware of it. In my GRC-122E I have an extra
toggle switch on the SA-1650 control panel which bypasses the current
loop to the printer side of the front UGC-74B, so I can suppress local
copy when sending tape from the TT-76. This saves a lotta paper when
transmitting call tapes.
One odd characteristic of the UGC-74 in KSR CHARACTER mode is that it
seems you cannot "type ahead" of the machine. I can type much faster
than 60 wpm, and when doing so, the UGC sends errors. The front panel
XMT lamp flashes when this occurs. I find I must pace myself when
typing to prevent this. This is not a problem with mechanical TTYs, as
tactile feedback from the keyboard tends to prevent this. But it's
quite annoying on the UGC, whose electronic keyboard gives you no such
feedback--except for that little XMT lamp. I'm curious if others have
experienced this, if there's a fix--or whether I'm simply doing
something wrong. I have not noticed this effect in LINE mode, though
for radio operation, the delay while a line of text accumulates is
annoying to the receiving operator.
