For what its worth, the American National Fine series played a true role in machineryand fire arms. The finer pitch allowed for a larger effective root diameter thus makingit stronger. The fine pitch allowed for modest torque producing a fastener less proneto loosening from vibration or shock.
Retailers began slimming down their on hand stock over the years the the fine serieswas generally dropped because the course series of 32 TPI sold well enough. You canstill buy the National Fine screws at your industrial screw dealers or gun supply shops. It is amazing how much mechanical diversity has been lost over the years to downsizingand bean counter decision making. Room here for anyone to build a viable business.
For bolt diameters #10 and larger, modern anerobic resins such as Loctite 242 is allyou need. I think you can email or write L.S. Starrett Company and get a pocket decimalchart from them which lists the screw series on one side along with the proper tap drillsize.
