[GreenKeys] Some pictures of stuff in the newspaper biz

The Durham Herald-Sun was still using hot lead for that daily paper as late as 1978. I did at least one trouble call for The Associated Press at the paper and it was the first time I'd ever seen a Linotype machine which used the 6-level Teletypesetter punched tape for news layups.
If I remember correctly, they were to be out of the hot lead business in less than a year, from a conversation I had with someone at the paper.

David,
When I was a kid, (late 1950’s likely) there was a tour of the local newspaper - the Greenfield (MA) Gazette, maybe for the Boy Scout troupe. I remember the linotype machines, and how they read the set up page upside down and backwards to check for errors. They made a paper impression of the page then cast the cylindrical impression in lead for the press. I seem to remember that the paper thing was damp at one point - maybe as they made the impression from the flat page of set up type.
the paper is still in operation, surprisingly, but I’s sure they don’t use the hot lead process now.
