Unfortunately, many of the US cellular providers have disabled the
ability to access the AT command interface to their phones with carrier
specific firmware.   So, I think it would be a random walk to find which
phones on which carriers would actually be able to do this.  I think
the number is very, very small.

This is where a dedicated, embedded cellmodem starts to shine.
