Western Union Model 31's - - -
Seems to me that Western Union's primary use for the model 31 was a
machine used at sporting events.
The "Sportscaster": would arrive at the stadium, open up his
handy-dandy model 31, plug the power cord in a receptacle, and the
line cord into a jack on the wall, and then merrily type the
blow-by-blow drama as Casy struck out, or the guys were winning one
for the Gipper, etc.
At the conclusion of the event he would quickly shut it down, pull
all the plugs, close the cover and take it and the bus home or to
wherever they were kept.
There are two here at W7TTY that theoretically came from Yankee
Stadium. One is in pretty good shape, and one is principally a parts
machine, as it has no case.
I believe the print hammer is a critical part. It is made of metal
of some sort, and must be watched lest that it either fall off or
get hammered down to unusability.
I have a third I got from Jackson Hart, Famous Teletyper.
All are 110 AC.
The motors really run at a high speed, 7200 RPM.
These machines print on 1/4" tape.
Anyone need one or all three??
Available documention includes a Bell Sytem Practices Book such as
was seen in the rack under the rear window in the old green
installers truck, and some other copies plus some real Teletype
manuals.
Speaking of 1/4" Tape, I have eleven rolls of gummed 1/4" tape
produced specifically for the M-209 Field Crypto. The stuff is
gummed, and all but one is in a glassine envelope. Neat little
wooden core and about 3-1/2 inches in diameter. I have no use for
it.
If made an unrefusable offer, they could go to a new home.
Regarding 7/8" Kleinschmidt Tape - - -
There is apparently more Klein stuff out there than I imagined. I am
running an ad on the Northwest Swap Net this coming sunday to see if
I can chase any more Klein Machinery or 7/8" tape out of the bushes.
Monday or Tuesday I'll post the latest Junque Boutique Stuff.
