[GreenKeys] Tape Help

It was rhythm only.  The tape that I had in the 1960s would type out a Christmas message while "playing" Jingle Bells
at the same time, i.e., the bells, being non-printing characters, were interspersed in the text and at the correct times so that a "tune" was played along with the text.  Pretty clever!

How exactly would it change the frequency of the bells?  
Or was it a rhythm, not the pitch?
