I don't think any hardware TU these days is the ultimate TU, because
DSP modems implemented in the computer can be a lot smarter.

Some people consider the ST-8000 to be the ultimate hardware TU, and
at least one guy even claimed it outperforms a software modem, but I
think he had some hard feelings toward the author of the software.

The Dovetron gets mixed reviews. I pointed out some time back that
there is a construction error in certain of the Dovetron units that
causes performance to be worse than it should be.

Then main argument concerns performance in the presence of multipath
echoes. Dovetron had several circuits that were supposed to help with
that, but seemed to eventually have given up on them. The ST-8000 has
what seems like a reasonable approach to the problem, but I don't know
how well it works in practice. I'm having some discussions with the
author of a software modem on that same topic.
