The ST8000 also has a built-in ASCII-to-BAUDOT converter and buffer.

what is the diff between the 8000 and 8000a?? is the newer better
faster!??!
Well the biggest difference is the lack of a CRT on the front panel
for a tuning indicator. The 8000a uses two rows of LEDs.
The next biggest difference are the connectors on the back panel.
The 8000 uses Molex and the 8000a uses Mil-spec circular
connectors.
Operationally, the 8000a does all the variables via a front panel
keyboard, the 8000 gives you knobs to turn and switches to
flip.
Both are viewed as HAL's top of the line best ever modems.
Of the HAL modems I've had over the years, I've had three
ST-6000, one ST-8000 and currently own an ST-8000A.
