Have you ever seen the WWII packing kit for shipping a Model 15?
The typing unit alone is bolted to a wooden base that goes
in a special frame crate with blocks to support important points.
Some key parts are removed first and the carriage clamped with special
clamps. The crate is then wrapped with special paper which absorbs
moisture. This crate then goes inside a metal can, and the metal
can is tinned shut, making it airtight and watertight. The can
then is placed in a second crate, with three inches of excelsior
for padding on all sides. The outer crate was then bolted and
strapped closed.
The typing unit alone, packed, weighed 138 pounds. The whole
machine, crated, weighed about 700 pounds.
