And then there is VoIP, which, IMHO, is completely useless for
communications.

The IT Crowd here has bet the farm on this and doubled down with VoIP
speaker phones that integrate with their precious Microsoft Link service.

All of this garbage makes for embarrassing conference calls with customers
where nobody can understand a word anyone has said (because it's all
"pixelated", which is an interesting application of a video phenomenon
to audio), the call drops repeatedly throughout the meeting (but that's
only after the wasted 15 minutes at the beginning while they screw around
with a PC trying to establish the call) and then we all leave wondering
WTF was accomplish over that last hour.

I've kept a POTS line in service at my house because I could actually
communicate over it but recently CenturyTel who bought Qwest who bought
Northwestern Bell have been unable to fix the hum and static on my circuit
which now renders that useless. Where do I get telephone service that
actually works now?

I'm thinking about moving to a cabin in the mountains and writing
manifestos...
