[GreenKeys] Diversity

Gentlemen,
In 1959, as a new novice class radio amateur, I learned about dual diversity
reception from my "elmer adviser" W9LEE (SK). The concept fascinated me and
I kept my eyes open for the next 50-some years waiting for such capability
to appear as a currently available piece of ham radio gear. Finally, in
2006 or thereabouts Flex-Radio Systems announced that this capability would
be included in their Model 5000A transceiver with two completely independent
receivers. I immediately ordered one but the software to make this possible
took a few years longer! It is a lot more complicated matter than just
having two signals! Remember that there are phase relationships that have
to be maintained as well!
Last summer I installed a second Hustler multiband antenna so that today I
have two that are separated by some 350 feet. I had not yet read the
recommendations of Flex Radio which specify that it is preferable to have
two antennas of different design. And as their engineers did the
development work they also realized that, since they had such control over
timing, it would be possible to "steer" the reception direction thus
rendering two wire type or vertical antennas capable of "beam type"
directional control for accentuation or rejection of signals by direction!
Really quite a remarkable system!
There are so many things I want to do with this "resource" I will admit that
I haven't connected any of the teleprinters yet----but who knows?
